Biomimicry for social innovation

The last decade there has been more change than the last century. Many systems and organisations however, have not yet adapted to the new reality and are thus no longer functioning properly. Yet how should we redesign our organisations so that they are less vulnerable to change and disruption?

There are some cooperatives on Earth that have been around since the Age of the Dinosaurs. They withstood all kinds of radical change and disruption, colonized every inhabitable part of the planet and weigh about the same as all of humankind or even more.

What is the secret of their success and can we humans apply some of their patterns and principles into our own organisational development? That is the basis of biomimicry for social innovation.

These cooperatives have no managers. Instead they rely on leaders that continuously sample their local environment, look for patterns and communicate these back to their colony. Their teams form and dissolve on the fly to match any opportunity or threat as it arises. They continously improve their environment to increase the success of future generations. That is how they, over millions of years, improved the capacity for adaptive evolution and became one of the most successful cooperatives in history.
